Clover produce some of the best quality craft tools and this is the best awl I have used. It's far better to get a tapered awl because thanks to the widened base you can make holes from teeny - 7mm wide. The steel shaft is perfectly smooth so you won't get any fabric rips or snags. As you'd expect the awl is very well made and will last and last. The handle is comfy and grippy in your hand and the awl itself is very strong - great for when you've got to roll-up your sleeves and get into a tussle with some leather or umpteen fabric layers (for example).

Super-useful for all manner of situations:

  • Pushing out neat corners out when turning RSO
  • When machine sewing pushing your work through when it won't go underneath the machine foot (grrr!)
  • Feeding ruffle/gathers/pleats underneath the machine foot
  • Piercing fabric for rivets (it's best not to break fibres when making holes for smaller rivets, this makes for more secure rivets
  • Piercing leather - I like to enlarge the sewing holes on leather tabs, it makes sewing them so much easier)
